A director from the USSR was able to bypass the American film industry.

The melodrama “Amphibian Man” was released at the very beginning of the 60s. The film by Vladimir Chebotarev won the love of the public and critics, and Hollywood directors were amazed at the results their Soviet colleague managed to achieve.

The fact is that several years before the premiere, the novel of the same name by Alexander Belyaev interested American producers. Walt Disney and other studio executives actively planned the film, but ultimately abandoned it due to technical difficulties. When the Americans learned that Chebotarev was planning to film the book, they were noticeably surprised. The director was actively criticized and ridiculed, because no one believed that he would be able to film something worthy.

“The Russians, who work on antediluvian technology, decided to challenge fate,” – this is exactly what they wrote in US newspapers when discussing the upcoming film.

But in the end, Chebotarev managed to conquer the whole world with his work. “Amphibian Man” was almost immediately recognized as a masterpiece, and audiences today cannot tear themselves away from the exciting story.
