Sydney: Following recent attacks that rocked the country, sales of pepper spray have reportedly skyrocketed in Western Australia. People have called on authorities to consider legalizing the possession of pepper spray for self-defense.
Only Western Australia currently allows people to carry non-lethal sprays under strict conditions. After the attack on the Westfield shopping center in Sydney’s Bondi Junction, retailers said demand for pepper spray products had increased last week, reports Australian media outlet ABC.
Pepper spray is also called oleoresin capsicum spray. Jeff Rodwell, a pepper spray retailer in Western Australia, said orders on his URSafe website had quadrupled in the past week. Orders were received from other parts of Australia but might not be accepted. He also said people wanted to protect themselves in case of another attack.
As early as 2018, there were calls for the federal government to allow the importation of pepper spray into the country and for states and territories to legalize its use for self-defense purposes.
The Australian Party’s Fraser Anning argued it would provide a non-lethal, easy-to-use means of protection. But others said it would be widely used as a weapon. The proposal therefore failed 46-5. Under the Western Australian Firearms Act 1999, pepper spray can only be carried for legitimate defensive purposes where “reasonable grounds” exist.
