Phoenix Set to Soar: Astra project to Crown Arizona’s Tallest Skyscraper
PHOENIX,AZ – The Phoenix skyline is on the cusp of a significant conversion as the Astra project gears up for its groundbreaking at the close of this year. Upon completion, Astra is slated to claim the title of Arizona’s tallest building, dethroning the iconic Chase Tower, which has held the record since its construction in the 1970s.
The aspiring growth, which Chris Mackay, the Community & economic Development Director for the City of Phoenix, discussed on “Arizona Horizon,” is projected to take approximately 36 months from commencement to completion.
The Astra project comprises two towers, with the primary structure reaching an extraordinary 44 stories and standing 542 feet tall. This will surpass Chase Tower’s current height of 483 feet by a considerable margin. The development is designed to be a mixed-use hub, featuring retail spaces, offices, a hotel, and an estimated 700 multi-family rental units.
Mackay highlighted the burgeoning appeal of downtown Phoenix, noting, “Downtown [Phoenix] has just turned into this new really exciting vibrant place that people want to live so they can walk to the pubs and walk to work.” The new towers will occupy the site of a current parking lot adjacent to the YMCA and Sun Devil Fitness Center.
This undertaking is a key component of Phoenix’s broader revitalization strategy for its downtown core. “We have had a really strong focus since 2014 on bringing new people to live in Downtown Phoenix,” Mackay stated. “We have gone from 10,000 people in 2014… to 24,500 today. We will be at 30,000 by 2030. And that doesn’t include our students.”
In parallel with the construction of Astra, the city is also actively involved in discussions surrounding the redevelopment of the current tallest building, Chase Tower. The building has remained vacant since Chase relocated its operations to Tempe in 2021. Although an official timeline for the Chase Tower redevelopment has not yet been announced, the property was acquired by Viola Lordsmeer L.P. in 2018 for $107.5 million.
“The developer who owns [Chase Tower] is working on their redevelopment plans now,” Mackay explained. “They’ve gutted the entire building and completed all the environmental work within the building and we are working really closely with them on the different disciplines that will be inside of that building. My guess is that [Chase Tower] will start redevelopment in early 2026.”
