Phoenix residents are bracing for a brief but intense heat wave, with temperatures expected to climb into the 90s through Saturday before a cooling trend arrives. The city set a record warm low of 72 degrees on Friday, breaking the previous record of 67 degrees set in 1986, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
The unusually warm temperatures approach as skies have been hazy since the start of the week due to higher-level moisture and cloud cover. Whereas relief is on the horizon, residents should prepare for potentially hazardous conditions, including gusty winds and the possibility of blowing dust, particularly along major transportation corridors.
Record-Breaking Warmth and Approaching Relief
The high temperature on Friday reached well into the 90s across the lower deserts and similar readings are forecast for Saturday. These temperatures are near daily records for late March, the NWS reported. But, a significant shift in the weather pattern is expected beginning Sunday, March 31, with highs dropping into the lower 90s and then the mid-80s by April 1.
Potential for Showers and Dust Storms
Isolated showers and weak thunderstorms are possible through Saturday, primarily south of the Phoenix metro area, including southern Maricopa County and Pinal County. Meteorologist Chris Kuhlman, in a forecast discussion, noted that much of any rainfall will likely evaporate before reaching the ground due to dry air near the surface.
More immediate concerns include gusty outflow winds, particularly along Interstate 8 and Interstate 10 corridors late Friday afternoon and evening. These winds could reach 30 to 40 mph, creating areas of blowing dust before weakening as they move into the metro area. There is a 10% to 20% chance of wind gusts exceeding 30 mph in Phoenix, with gusts up to 35 mph possible around 7-8 p.m., according to the NWS.
Gusty winds & blowing dust are possible this evening across south-central Arizona. Winds will be strongest along the I-8 & I-10 corridors. Use caution if traveling! 🌬️💨 https://t.co/qJq9q9q9q9

Looking Ahead: Cooler Temperatures and Limited Rain
Isolated storm chances will continue on Saturday, mainly over higher terrain south and east of Phoenix, with rain chances ranging from 10% to 25%. The cooling trend will solidify on Sunday, March 31, as a weak weather system moves through the region. Rain chances will drop to near zero by April 1 as drier air moves in. Some high terrain showers remain possible on April 1, but the probability is low, generally between 5% and 20%, according to the NWS.
Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and be aware of potential dust storm hazards. The approaching cooler temperatures offer a welcome respite, but continued monitoring of weather updates is advised.
What comes next will depend on the track of the weather system moving through the region. The NWS will continue to provide updates as the situation evolves. Share your weather photos and experiences with us in the comments below, and please stay safe.
