Pink Moon 2024: When & Where to See It

A pink-hued full moon was visible across much of the globe on Thursday night, captivating observers from North and South America to Europe and Africa. The phenomenon, often dubbed a “Pink Moon,” is not actually pink in color, but rather takes its name from the blooming wild ground phlox native to North America during springtime.

The full moon occurred on Thursday, April 25th, reaching peak illumination at 4:49 AM EDT (0849 GMT), according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac. While the moon appeared brightest at that time, its pinkish tint was most noticeable closer to the horizon, an effect caused by the scattering of light through the Earth’s atmosphere.

This month’s full moon is also known as the Sprouting Grass Moon, a name used by various Native American tribes, reflecting the seasonal changes occurring at this time of year. Other traditional names include the Egg Moon and the Fish Moon, highlighting the agricultural and natural cycles observed by different cultures.

Astronomers clarified that the color variation is a perceptual effect, not an inherent property of the moon itself. The intensity of the pink hue depends on atmospheric conditions, including the presence of dust particles and moisture. Clearer skies generally result in a brighter, whiter full moon, while more particulate matter can enhance the pinkish or reddish tones.

The April full moon follows a series of celestial events in recent weeks, including a solar eclipse visible across parts of the Americas on April 8th. The next full moon, known as the Flower Moon, is scheduled for May 23rd.

NASA has not issued any specific statements regarding this particular full moon, but routinely provides information and imagery related to lunar cycles and astronomical phenomena on its website and social media channels. The agency continues to focus on its Artemis program, aiming to return humans to the Moon later this decade.

The European Space Agency (ESA) also monitors lunar activity, contributing to international efforts to understand the Moon’s composition, environment and potential for future exploration. ESA’s Lunar Pathfinder mission, scheduled for launch later this year, will pave the way for improved lunar communications.
