Pixar’s Hoppers: Director Fought to Keep Shocking Scene in Disney Film

Pixar’s latest offering, Hoppers, has arrived in theaters, and early reactions suggest it’s a return to form for the animation studio. The film, a science fiction comedy, is earning praise for its humor, heart, and surprising narrative choices. One moment in particular, a seemingly out-of-place scene early in the film, nearly didn’t make the cut, according to director Daniel Chong. He fully anticipated having to remove it, believing it too bold for a Disney release.

The controversial scene involves Mabel Tanaka, a human whose consciousness has been transferred into a robotic beaver, and the Insect Queen, voiced by Meryl Streep. In a swift and unexpected turn, Mabel instinctively squishes the Queen between her hands. This moment, while jarring, is crucial to the plot, setting up the arc of the Queen’s son, Titus, voiced by Dave Franco. Chong initially created a less impactful alternative, bracing for studio intervention.

Speaking with Slashfilm, Chong explained his initial apprehension. “I remember after our first screening or second screening … we were like, ‘You know what? There’s probably no chance we’re ever going to acquire away [with] doing this. So we should just change it now so that we don’t get this note and get screwed later,’” Chong said. He re-edited the scene for a subsequent screening, having the Insect Queen die of natural causes, with Mabel and the mammal king, George, appearing as if they were merely present during the event. However, this revised version lacked the punch of the original.

Fortunately for Chong, and according to the director, for the film itself, Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter (director of Up, Inside Out, and Monsters, Inc.) and Andrew Stanton (director of Finding Nemo, WALL-E, and the upcoming Toy Story 5) intervened. They were reportedly “mad” at the change, insisting the original, more shocking moment be reinstated. Chong recounted their support: “They were like, ‘Why did you change that?!’ And we were like, ‘Well, we thought, because it’s Disney, we thought… ‘ And they were like, ‘No! Put that back in.’ And we were like, ‘Okay, but promise to make sure we don’t have to change this.’ And they were like, ‘We will fight for this.’”

The Importance of Creative Freedom at Pixar

The story highlights the surprising level of creative freedom afforded to filmmakers at Pixar. Despite being owned by Disney, known for its family-friendly brand, the studio appears willing to champion unconventional choices when they serve the story. This willingness to embrace risk is a key element of Pixar’s continued success, as evidenced by the $150 million budget allocated to Hoppers, according to official figures from the film’s Wikipedia page. [1] The film has already grossed $252,178 as of March 7, 2026. [1]

Hoppers centers around Mabel Tanaka (voiced by Piper Curda), an animal lover who uses modern technology to inhabit the body of a robotic beaver, allowing her to communicate with animals. Her efforts to protect their habitat inadvertently trigger an uprising within the animal kingdom. The film similarly stars Bobby Moynihan, Jon Hamm, Kathy Najimy, and Dave Franco. [1]

Character Dynamics and Storytelling in ‘Hoppers’

Beyond the surprising scene with the Insect Queen, Hoppers explores complex character dynamics. King George, the leader of the beaver pond, is described as a jovial and optimistic figure who prioritizes harmony within his community. [2] The film’s narrative hinges on Mabel’s journey to understand the animal world and rally them against a looming human threat. According to Pixar’s official website, the film’s creators were guided by “the comedy and the characters” throughout the production process. [2]

The film premiered at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles on February 23, 2026, and saw a wider release in the United States on March 6, 2026. [1] Early reviews have been positive, suggesting audiences are responding well to the film’s unique blend of humor and heartfelt storytelling.

As Hoppers continues its theatrical run, it will be interesting to see how audiences react to its bolder moments and whether they embrace the film’s unconventional approach to animated storytelling. The film’s success could signal a willingness from Disney and Pixar to push boundaries and accept risks in future projects.
