Pixar appears to be back on solid ground as its latest animated feature, “Jumpers – Un salto tra gli animali” (Jumpers – A Leap Between Animals), debuted at the top of the box office in both Italy and the United States. The film’s strong opening provides a welcome boost for the studio, whereas Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Bride” experienced a disappointing launch despite pre-release buzz.
“Jumpers” has quickly become a box office success, earning $46 million domestically from 4,000 theaters, averaging $11,500 per screen and a solid €1.6 million in Italy from 512 locations. Globally, the film has grossed $88 million, marking Pixar’s best original animated film opening since “Coco” in 2017.
The Italian box office also saw strong performance from a local comedy starring Fabio De Luigi and Virginia Raffaele, “Un bel giorno” (A Beautiful Day), which secured the second spot with a gross of €1.6 million from 493 theaters and 223,986 admissions, according to Cinetel data.
The success of “Jumpers” offers a significant turnaround for Pixar, which has faced scrutiny in recent years. The film’s positive reception signals a renewed creative momentum for the animation giant.
“The Bride” Struggles to Connect with Audiences
In contrast to “Jumpers’s” strong debut, “The Bride,” Maggie Gyllenhaal’s reimagining of the classic Frankenstein story, has underperformed at the box office. Despite generating discussion due to its allegorical themes and star-studded cast, the film has failed to resonate with audiences.
In the United States, “The Bride” opened in third place with $7.2 million from 3,304 theaters, averaging $2,197 per screen. The film, starring Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale, carries a substantial budget of $80 million. Globally, “The Bride” has collected just $13.5 million, making a return on investment unlikely, presenting a challenge for Warner Bros. Pictures.
In Italy, the film opened to a modest eighth place, earning only €226,000.
Other Box Office Highlights
“Scream 7” saw a decline in its second week, adding €636,000 to its total, bringing its cumulative earnings to over €2.5 million. The franchise continues to perform well despite recent controversies surrounding cast changes and calls for boycotts. “Dune: Part Two” has reached €10.6 million in Italy and $213.6 million globally, solidifying its status as a major success.
Gyllenhaal previously stated that scenes of violence in “The Bride” were difficult to portray and required editing, according to reports.
The disappointing performance of “The Bride” raises questions about its ability to recoup its significant production costs. The film’s thematic complexity and potentially challenging subject matter may have limited its appeal to a broader audience.
What comes next for both films remains to be seen. The continued success of “Jumpers” will be closely watched as Pixar seeks to solidify its return to form, while the fate of “The Bride” will depend on its performance in international markets. The coming weeks will provide a clearer picture of the long-term box office prospects for both releases.
