Pokémon Legends: Z-A Mega Evolutions Are Still Dumb, Despite Garchomp Z

The arrival of Mega Garchomp Z in Pokémon Legends: Z-A – revealed during the 30th-anniversary Pokémon Presents stream on February 27th – feels less like a celebration and more like a stubborn refusal to let go. For over a decade, Mega Evolutions have been a contentious part of the Pokémon experience, and their return in Legends: Z-A only reinforces the argument that this battle mechanic, while visually interesting, fundamentally undermines the strategic core of the franchise.

Introduced in 2013 with Pokémon X and Y, Mega Evolution allows certain Pokémon to temporarily transform into more powerful forms during battle by holding a specific Mega Stone. This transformation boosts base stats by roughly 100 points and alters the Pokémon’s appearance. As of writing, approximately 90 Pokémon are capable of Mega Evolving, with some, like Charizard, possessing multiple forms, according to Serebii.net.

But the core problem with Mega Evolutions isn’t their existence; it’s what they do to the carefully constructed rock-paper-scissors dynamic that has defined Pokémon battles for 30 years. The series has always thrived on type matchups – fire beats grass, water beats fire, and so on – requiring players to strategically build teams and adapt to their opponents. Mega Evolution largely throws that out the window.

Having spent time with Pokémon Legends: Z-A since its October 2025 release, the impact of Mega Evolution is clear. When facing a difficult opponent, simply Mega Evolving a Pokémon often provides an instant advantage, negating the demand for careful type consideration. The stat boost is often enough to turn the tide, reducing battles to a numbers game rather than a test of strategic thinking.

The Cost of Held Items

The issue extends beyond type matchups. Pokémon can only hold one item at a time, creating a frustrating trade-off. A Charcoal boosts Fire-type move damage, while Leftovers provide passive healing each turn. These items offer nuanced advantages, allowing for diverse team builds. But the sheer power of Mega Evolution incentivizes players to prioritize the Mega Stone over these more subtle, strategic options. Why bother with a marginal advantage when you can instantly transform your Pokémon into a powerhouse?

This isn’t a matter of simply choosing not to use the mechanic. Pokémon Legends: Z-A actively pushes players toward Mega Evolution through “Rogue Mega Evolution” encounters. These battles against powerful, uncontrolled Mega Pokémon require players to utilize their own Mega Evolutions to succeed, often devolving into repetitive, tedious boss fights. These encounters, requiring players to spam attacks while rolling around a bland battlefield, are a significant roadblock in progression.

A Gimmick That Won’t Die

The introduction of Mega Garchomp Z, as a celebratory addition for Pokémon’s 30th anniversary, suggests that The Pokémon Company isn’t ready to abandon Mega Evolutions. The December 2025 release of the Mega Dimension DLC for Pokémon Legends: Z-A further cemented this commitment, adding even more Mega Evolutions to the roster. It seems this particular gimmick is destined to endure, despite its detractors.

Perhaps the most frustrating aspect is that the core Pokémon formula remains compelling. The thrill of catching, training, and battling Pokémon is still present. But Mega Evolution feels like an unnecessary layer of complexity that detracts from the strategic depth that made the series so beloved in the first place. While some may appreciate the visual spectacle and raw power of Mega Evolution, it ultimately feels like a step backward for a franchise that has always rewarded thoughtful gameplay.

The future of Mega Evolution within the Pokémon universe remains uncertain. Still, given its continued presence in Pokémon Legends: Z-A and the ongoing support from The Pokémon Company, it’s unlikely to disappear anytime soon. Players can expect further additions to the roster, and the debate surrounding this controversial mechanic will undoubtedly continue.
