Diesel fuel prices in Poland are poised to reach 8 złoty per liter, while liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices are hitting record highs, according to industry analysts. The anticipated surge in diesel costs is driven by global market trends and geopolitical factors, impacting transportation and consumer expenses.
The rising cost of diesel is particularly concerning for the transportation sector, where fuel represents a significant operational expense. Adaptations are being considered, including the increasing adoption of LPG as an alternative fuel source for diesel engines. GasCar, a company specializing in gas system installations, reports a growing demand for converting diesel vehicles to run on LPG, offering mobile installation services for trucks and other commercial vehicles. The process involves introducing LPG into the air intake while reducing diesel fuel consumption, potentially achieving savings of up to 30% for vehicles and 50% for stationary engines.
Several companies, including ELPIGAZ and Stag, are actively promoting and installing LPG systems for diesel engines. Stag highlights the potential for cost savings, with installations allowing for the replacement of a portion of diesel with cheaper LPG. For long-haul trucks, this could indicate reducing diesel consumption from 30 liters to approximately 20 liters, supplemented by 10-12 liters of LPG. The company also claims that diesel engines with LPG installations can experience a power increase of 10 to 30% due to improved combustion.
The installation of LPG systems for diesel engines doesn’t require major modifications to the engine itself, typically involving the addition of a reducer, gas injector, filter, MAP sensor, and control unit. Proper calibration is crucial for maximizing efficiency and realizing cost savings. The economic benefits stem from the price difference between diesel and LPG – currently 5.51 złoty per liter for diesel versus 2.81 złoty per liter for LPG, according to GasCar’s pricing as of March 14, 2026.
While the potential for savings is significant, the adoption of diesel-LPG systems isn’t without consideration. Intercars.pl notes that LPG is more commonly used in heavy vehicles than in passenger cars. A calculator available on gazeo.pl allows vehicle owners to estimate the potential cost savings and amortization period for installing an LPG system.
The Polish government has faced pressure to address rising fuel prices, with calls for a reduction in VAT on fuels. Although, the Prime Minister has not yet responded to these requests. The situation remains fluid, with fuel prices continuing to fluctuate based on market conditions and geopolitical developments.
