Political Updates in Africa: Campaigns, Coup Challenges, and Diplomatic Mediation

In Senegal, this is an unprecedented campaign and yet it is taking place almost normally. The 19 candidates have only two weeks to convince voters, compared to twenty-one days provided for by the electoral code. They continue to campaign in the middle of the month of Ramadan.

Also in the news, in Gabon, the CEO of the Gabonese Democratic Party, the former ruling party, is seeking a makeover. Weakened by the military coup of August 30, it is in turmoil. Rebels have just taken the matter to the Constitutional Court to challenge the latest appointments of the executive secretariat.

Finally, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, mediation was proposed by Angola and its president Joao Lourenço, mediator of the African Union. He received Rwandan President Paul Kagamé in Luanda and, according to the Angolan authorities, a meeting between Paul Kagamé and Félix Thsisekedi might take place soon. A significant diplomatic step forward, while on the ground, clashes have intensified in recent weeks.
