VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis on Sunday described his visit this week to Mongolia — the first pilgrimage by a pontiff to that East Asian nation — as a much-awaited occasion to meet a “noble and wise” people. .

Addressing the faithful in St. Peter’s Square, Francis said the trip will also be an opportunity to welcome the Catholic community there, which he said is “small in number but dynamic in faith and great in charity.” The trip is also an opportunity “to get up close and personal with a noble and wise people,” he added.

Francis will leave on Thursday and return to Rome four days later. There are fewer than 1,500 Catholics in Mongolia, one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world, with just 3.2 million people.
