The last visit of a pope to Belgium dates back to 1995, when John Paul II came for the beatification of Father Damien. His visit was then limited to Brussels. Ten years earlier, in 1985, the same pope had made a longer visit to the kingdom during which he visited Louvain, Namur, Beauraing, Antwerp, Banneux, Liège and Mechelen.
