Ports: Casablanca/Jorf Lasfar achieve 70.5% of traffic in 2021 | Conso news

The ports of Casablanca and Jorf Lasfar ensured the transit of 64.1 million tonnes (MT) at the end of the past year, which represents approximately 70.5% of the traffic of the ports managed by the National Ports Agency ( PNA).

Figured at 35.1 million tonnes at the end of 2021, the port of Jorf Lasfar confirms its first place with a share of around 39% of global traffic, says the ANP in a note on the port activity for the year 2021.

Compared to the previous year, this port recorded a 5.4% drop in volumes handled, mainly due to the drop in traffic in fertilizers (-8.8%), coal (-3.3%), sulfur (-9.1%), cereals (-16.5%) and ammonia (-12.9%).

However, exports of phosphoric acid increased by 19.4% with a volume of regarding 1.9 million tons. Similarly, diesel traffic increased by 10.5%, totaling a volume of 2.1 million tonnes.

Representing regarding 32% of global traffic, the port of Casablanca ensured the transit of 29 MT at the end of December 2021. Compared to the same period last year, this port recorded a drop of 4.3%, which s explained mainly by the sharp drop in imports of cereals (-21.5%), phosphates (-5.3%) and animal feed (-18.2%).

However, container and sugar traffic showed respective increases of +4.7% and +12.2%, with respective volumes of 1.1 MEVP and 1.5 MT.

The note also highlights that the ports of Safi recorded, at the end of 2021, a volume of 9.9 MT, up 12.7% compared to 2020, while the port of Mohammedia marked, for the first time since 2017, a reversal of the downward trend that characterized the volumes passing through this port (+4.9% to 4.9 MT).

With a volume of approximately 3.9 MT recorded for the year 2021, the activity of the port of Nador marked a sharp increase of 19.8%. The port of Laâyoune ensured the transit of 2.1 MT (+16.5%) and that of Agadir 5.6 MT (-6.6%).
