Porziņģis Considers Warriors Future, Praises Curry & Training Staff

Golden State Warriors forward Kristaps Porziņģis appears increasingly optimistic about his future with the team, just seven weeks after arriving in a trade with the Boston Celtics. Whereas not publicly committing to re-signing with the Warriors this offseason, Porziņģis has been impressed with the organization’s medical staff and the potential of playing alongside Stephen Curry, signaling a strong possibility he’ll prioritize remaining in the Bay Area.

The Warriors acquired Porziņģis, in part, to assess his health and fit within their system, and to potentially leverage his expiring $30.7 million contract. However, the evaluation appears to be going both ways, with Porziņģis quickly developing a positive impression of the Warriors’ culture and resources. His decision as an unrestricted free agent will likely hinge on his confidence in a team’s ability to manage his health, and currently, Golden State appears to be leading the pack.

Porziņģis Praises Warriors’ Medical Approach

A key factor in Porziņģis’s growing affinity for the Warriors is his relationship with Dr. Rick Celebrini, the team’s director of sports medicine. After being sidelined for four weeks with tendinitis in his left Achilles prior to the trade, Porziņģis has found Celebrini’s approach to be highly effective. “Rick’s amazing,” Porziņģis said Thursday after practice. “Rick is the goat, man. Really. I’m very happy with these guys, and I’m sure they will keep me on the same path.” This trust is crucial, as Porziņģis’s injury history has been a concern throughout his career.

Since joining the Warriors, Porziņģis has appeared in seven of the team’s last nine games, a clear indication of progress in his recovery. He’s cautiously optimistic about eventually being able to participate in back-to-back games, stating, “I think it’s a conversation. I don’t know yet if I will obtain the chance, but maybe. Maybe. Doing pretty good and recovering well.” He acknowledges he’s still working towards regaining full playing capacity, but feels his performance is improving with each game.

The Allure of Playing with Stephen Curry

Beyond the medical staff, the prospect of playing alongside Stephen Curry is a significant draw for Porziņģis. Despite arriving shortly after Curry suffered a “runner’s knee” injury, the two have yet to share the court in a game. However, Porziņģis is already envisioning the offensive possibilities. “Yeah, for sure, just more open looks, honestly,” he explained. “It just simplifies it. It will just be more open looks for everybody. But also, learning his style a bit better. Because he moves so much. It takes a little bit of time to get a rhythm, to get a feel for where he’s running, what he’s doing and where he’s expecting the ball.”

He continued, “He’s not running for free, while we’re doing something else. We have to make sure we find a good rhythm.” The Warriors front office recognizes the value of seeing Curry and Porziņģis play together and are eager to evaluate their on-court chemistry during the remaining nine regular season games and the upcoming play-in tournament. Stephen Curry’s eventual return is therefore a priority.

What’s Next for Porziņģis and the Warriors?

The Warriors are currently awaiting a timetable for Curry’s return, which is expected to be announced Friday before their game against the Washington Wizards. Porziņģis has expressed his eagerness to share the court with Curry as soon as possible, recognizing Curry’s transformative impact on the game. “He has changed the game,” Porziņģis said. “To be on the same team, just to be around him, even without playing, it’s pretty cool. To learn from him, hear how he sees the game, it’s something you don’t take for granted.”

As the Warriors navigate the final stretch of the regular season and prepare for the play-in tournament, the development of the Porziņģis-Curry dynamic will be a key storyline. The team’s ability to integrate Porziņģis effectively and keep him healthy will be crucial to their playoff aspirations. The next few weeks will be pivotal in determining whether Porziņģis ultimately chooses to remain with the Warriors long-term.
