The government has asked Engie to postpone the closure of the Tihange 2 reactor from February 1 to the end of March 2023 to help guarantee the security of electricity supply this winter. For the energy company, it’s too late, writes Le Soir this Saturday.
The government approved a plan on Friday that should allow the country to get through the winter without energy problems and show solidarity with its neighbors. To achieve this, the government has also made a request to Engie to extend the activity of Tihange 2 during the winter. The energy company considers that the extension, even for only two months, of Tihange 2 is not “not possible”.
This is not possible with regard to the imperatives of nuclear safety
“Taking into account the concrete situation, considering such a scenario in haste, without the necessary preliminary studies having been carried out, is not possible with regard to the imperatives of nuclear safety – for which we are solely responsible and which is our main concern. – and technical constraints”, says Anne-Sophie Hugé, spokesperson for Engie.
“But we remain aware of the stakes and as we have always done, we will take all reasonable measures to help guarantee this security of supply”, added the spokesperson.
