“Potential Presidential Candidates in Lebanon: Updates and Political Negotiations”

2023-05-28 05:18:17

NNA – The electronic Al-Anbaa newspaper wrote: There has been much talk regarding a principled agreement between the opposition blocs and the strong Lebanon bloc over the name of the former minister, Jihad Azour. This belief is reinforced by the unconfirmed leaks regarding the meeting that took place away from the media between Azour and the head of the Loyalty to the Resistance bloc, MP Muhammad Raad in Haret Hreik, prior to Azour’s visit to Saudi Arabia, in addition to a series of other meetings he held in Lebanon, and talk regarding conveying to him a clear message that he refuses to be a candidate for challenge.

Sources keeping pace with the movements revealed to the electronic newspaper “Al-Anbaa” that agreement on Azour between the Free Patriotic Movement and the opposition has become just around the corner, and that the head of the movement, Representative Gebran Bassil, who was waiting for positive signs in his favor in the recent appearance of Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah, was surprised by Nasrallah’s adherence to the candidacy. Franjieh, and inviting the opposition to dialogue regarding the name they deem appropriate without referring to it, even insinuatingly, despite his repeated assertion that he would not accept a president who would provoke Hezbollah, and that Nasrallah, in Basil’s opinion, ignored that, intentionally or unintentionally.

The accompanying sources point out that the leader of the Orange Movement is reporting almost certain information that Patriarch Mar Bechara Al-Rahi, who will meet with French President Emmanuel Macron on the second of June, brings with him a list of names of presidential candidates, including a member of the Strong Lebanon bloc, Representative Ibrahim Kanaan, and for this reason he announced his initial approval of Azour. .

In the context of the positions, a member of the National Moderation Bloc, MP Ahmad Rostom, saw that the Free Patriotic Movement and the Lebanese Forces agreed in principle on Azour’s candidacy, but things are still murky pending developments that may arise, and the possibility that Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri will set a date for an election session. President on or before June 15th, if things go that way.

Rustom pointed out in an interview with the electronic “al-Anbaa” that the National Moderation Bloc does not care regarding the name as much as it cares regarding the rescue issue, as the country is collapsing and the people can no longer tolerate the vacuum in power, considering that the adoption of the two large Christian blocs for Azour’s candidacy alone is not enough, pending the announcement of the rest of the parties About its position, noting that the National Moderation bloc is at the same distance from everyone and has not yet decided its position until the picture becomes more clear, indicating that there is a big difference between Azour being a national consensus candidate, and a Saudi settlement or a competitive candidate who wants to run in the elections once morest Suleiman Franjieh.

Regarding Azour’s visit to Saudi Arabia, Rustom hoped that this visit would answer all the questions we raise as independent deputies. Noting that Berri will not call for an election session until he is sure that Azour’s candidacy is serious and whether the blocs are going to converge in deed and not in word, and if the session will bear fruit or not.

For his part, former MP Mario Aoun described, in contact with electronic Al-Anbaa, that Basil’s approval of Azour’s candidacy is an escape forward from a difficult reality within the Free Patriotic Movement. There is a tremor within the orange movement regarding him, as some in the movement have been wondering for some time whether there are people within the movement who are fit to run for the presidency other than Gebran Bassil, which prompted him to agree to Azour.

Aoun considered that it is expected that Basil’s plan will reach a dead end, because Azour will not run once morest Franjieh, as he wants to be a candidate of consensus and consensus and not a competitive candidate, but if Azour agrees to run, he will not obtain a majority of 65 votes, ruling out the election of the President of the Republic at a later time. It is close and all that Basil does is buy time, especially with the presence of great differentiation among some of the deputies of the current, such as Elias Bou Saab, Ibrahim Kanaan, Now Aoun and others, but they were very late in announcing it and ascertaining Basil’s intentions.

So, nothing is guaranteed until now, and it is clear that despite the moves, the signs of an agreement on a president soon are still scant, amid the current confusion and ambiguity that some intend, so that Lebanon remains on the threshold of waiting for the surprises of the coming days.
