However, by the end of the 18th century, the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars had plunged Europe into a period of instability. Historical riches and properties were threatened, Laeken Castle being no exception. In 1803, Napoleon Bonaparte, then First Consul of the French Republic, was at the height of his power and influence.

Built on the initiative of the Austrian Archdukes and Governors General of the Netherlands, Marie-Christine of Austria and Albert of Saxe-Teschen between 1781 and 1785, Schonenberg Castle, in Laeken, almost never housed our sovereigns.

Forced to leave the castle following the French Revolution and the annexation of our territory to France in 1794-1795, the Archdukes sold the domain while the surrounding lands were shared. Over the years, the future of Laeken Castle grew darker. Looted and damaged, it is a dilapidated building that the doctor Jean-Baptiste Terrade bought. He is also planning to demolish it.
