Weeks following the Ukrainian military launched an offensive to retake Russian-occupied territory, President Zelensky admitted in an interview that progress on the battlefield had been “slower than expected”.
Zelensky told the BBC, “Some people think that this is a Hollywood movie and expect the outcome now, no, it’s regarding people’s lives.”
According to Ukrainian officials, the counteroffensive has so far captured eight villages in the southern Zaporizhia region and the eastern Donetsk region. Zelensky said that because 200,000 square kilometers of Uzbekistan’s territory was mined by the Russian army, it would not be easy for the Ukrainian army to advance. “No matter what some people may want, including trying to pressure us, IMHO, we We will advance on the field in the way we think is best.”
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg recently pointed out that Ukraine will not be formally invited to join the upcoming Vilnius summit in mid-July. Zelensky emphasized in the interview that Ukraine needs security guarantees from NATO, but the ultimate goal is to join NATO.
“Stotenberg knows where I stand, we’ve told them many times, don’t completely undermine our confidence in this matter,” Zelensky said.
