People who are caught letting themselves be distracted by their smartphone risk having their license revoked for 15 days. They will then have to appear before a police court where they might be sentenced to a fine of between 240 and 4,000 euros as well as a withdrawal of their license which might last 5 years, specifies the Hal-Vilvoorde public prosecutor’s office.
According to the Vias institute, the use of the telephone while driving is responsible for 8% of fatal accidents in Belgium. He estimates the number of people injured in non-fatal accidents at 4,500 each year.
