Prime Minister of Haiti announces that he will leave office

Ariel Henry, Prime Minister of Haiti, indicated this Tuesday that he will resign from office after a transitional council is established in the country. The event occurs in the midst of a strong social crisis that is plaguing the island..

Irfaan Ali, president of Guyana and head of Caricomexplained that the Prime Minister of Haiti made his decision known to other heads of government in the region. Likewise, he explained that said country agreed “the creation of a transitional presidential council made up of seven members with voting rights and two observers”.

“We are pleased to announce the commitment to a transitional governance agreement that paves the way for a peaceful transition of power, continuity of governance and an action plan for near-term security and the route to free and fair elections”continued Ali.

For the formation of the transition council and subsequent appointment of the new prime minister of Haiti, The president of Guyana explained that this group will be in charge of selecting the protagonists, in an inclusive alliance.

Agreement of December 21, RED/EDE, Lavalas, Montana, Pitit Dessalines and the private sector, while the observers will be members of civil society and the religious community will have a member on said council.

The crisis in Haiti began last month, with violence in the streets due to Henry’s own announcement to hold elections before August of next year. The people’s annoyance aroused because according to an agreement signed in 2022, the official had to leave his position in February of this year.
