Pro-Palestine Activists Protest EU Parliament President in Vienna: Updates on EU Middle East Policy and Election Issues

Demonstrators said goodbye to the President of the EU Parliament in Vienna with red paint bags.

A few minutes before Roberta Metsola’s departure for the airport, there was a loud protest by some pro-Palestine activists in front of the Federal Chancellery, during which buckets of red paint were spilled on people and a black limousine. However, EU Middle East policy was not officially an issue during the President of the EU Parliament’s flying visit to Vienna. Instead, the most important message from the Maltese was: “Please go vote!” Austria will send 20 members of parliament to the European Parliament in Brussels and Strasbourg in the coming legislative period – one more than before. According to all surveys, the FPÖ will be the strongest force for the first time at the polls on June 9th, followed by the SPÖ and ÖVP.

Nehammer advocates external border protection

During a conversation between Metsola and the Federal Chancellor – both belong to the European People’s Party (EPP) – the topic of illegal migration also came up: Karl Nehammer is committed to asylum procedures in third countries and rigorous external border protection. This is also the basis for Austria’s consent to Romania and Bulgaria joining Schengen, the ÖVP leader repeated to journalists. “The European Parliament is convinced that we can do that,” replied Maltese Metsola. Within the EPP, Austria’s Schengen veto has caused people to shake their heads in recent months.

In addition to illegal migration, one of the most important election issues for the EPP is strengthening the EU internal market in competition with the USA and China. The common economic area must be further developed and its advantages made clear to people, said 45-year-old Metsola.

As part of her visit to Austria, she also met European Minister Karoline Edtstadler and National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka. ( once more)
