Promising Celine Naef Puts up a Fight but Falls Short to Anastasia Potapova at WTA 1000 Cincinnati

Celine Naef (WTA 161) did not go far from the feat in the first round in Cincinnati. For her first in a WTA 1000 tournament, the 18-year-old from Zurich lost 1-6 6-4 7-5 to Russian Anastasia Potapova (27).

With the benefit of an invitation, Naef bravely played his luck. In an opening set of fire, she only conceded 10 points to her opponent. The Russian, who had already eliminated Naef for her first Grand Slam at Wimbledon, as soon as she entered the competition, however, raised the bar.

In the second set, she forced the decision in the tenth game when the Swiss led 40-15. Far from being defeated, Naef started the final set perfectly to take the lead 3-1. But Potapova tightened her guard to come back and better negotiated the end of the set to win and thus enforce the hierarchy.
