Customers at a Publix supermarket in Acworth, Georgia, are waiting up to 40 minutes to be checked out by cashier Michael Masterangelo, a beloved employee who has turn into known for his overwhelmingly positive attitude.
Masterangelo, who has a cognitive disability, has cultivated a loyal following among shoppers who seek out his checkout line. “As soon as I come through the door, I look for him,” one customer told 9News. “And when he’s there, it just changes everything.”
His manager, Courtney McGuinness, described Masterangelo’s impact on the store environment. “His positive energy, that he brings with him every day to work, makes working and shopping here enjoyable. He always smiles. He always talks to people.”
Recently, Masterangelo channeled his popularity into a fundraising effort for the Special Olympics. He invited customers to donate to the organization, setting a personal goal that he surpassed in just six days. According to McGuinness, Masterangelo raised $31,603 – exceeding the amount collected by some entire districts in the region.
“They make me so happy and cheer me on!” Masterangelo said of his customers. His mother, Dayna, has also been touched by the outpouring of support. “I feel like I did a good job raising him, and he’s a light to everyone. I secure text messages, phone calls.”
Publix has a history of supporting individuals with disabilities. A recent report highlighted the contributions of Special Olympics associates within the company, emphasizing their dedication and commitment to the organization.
Masterangelo expressed his joy in coming to work each day, stating, “I just feel so happy to come to work here every day. It feels like I’m something special when I help others.”
