Qatar and China Sign Agreement to Build State-of-the-Art LNG Ships – $600 Million Contract Signed

Doha: Qatar and China have signed an agreement to build huge LNG ships to transport liquefied natural gas. A contract has been signed with China State Shipbuilding Corporation for the construction of 18 state-of-the-art LNG vessels of maximum QC size. China will build 18 ships for Qatar Energy. The contract amount is $600 crore. The capacity of the vessel is 2.71 lakh cubic meters. China will deliver the first eight ships in 2028-29 and the remaining ten ships in 2030-31.

Saad Sherida Al Kaabi, Qatari Minister of Energy and CEO of Qatar Energy, and representatives of Hudong Group signed the agreement. Saad Sherida Al Kaabi said Qatar Energy and a Chinese company signed the largest shipbuilding contract in the history of the natural gas industry.

Currently, the same Chinese company is building 12 full-sized ships for Qatar. The first batch will arrive in Qatar this year. China is also a major LNG customer of Qatar. In 2023, China imported 17 million tonnes of LNG from Qatar.

Qatar aims to significantly increase its LNG production by 2030. Production has almost doubled

It will increase to 142 million tonnes. In this situation, LNG transportation facilities are also expanded.
