Margrethe II only handed over the throne to her son Frederik in mid-January. But instead of being able to enjoy her retirement, the ex-monarch has to work once more and is actually acting as regent of Denmark. The Danes are not particularly happy regarding this.
However, this is less due to Margrethe and more due to Frederik. The new king is currently treating himself to a vacation with his family. However, a member of the royal family must always be in Denmark to represent the monarch when he is abroad.
Holidays abroad: The new king is gone for now
According to “Bild”, this task is actually taken on by Crown Prince Christian, Frederik’s 18-year-old son. But he went on vacation with us, which is why Margrethe has to step in. In an emergency, she has to sign new laws, approve ministers and generally be available for important official acts.
The Danish population is anything but happy that Frederik is taking a long break so soon following his enthronement and fears that he is not taking the job seriously enough.
Actually, Frederik should have his hands full
Historian Lars Hovbakke Sørensen is also surprised: “It is logical that he can be represented by his mother, but the fact that this happens so soon following the change of throne is special.” One might actually assume, says Sørensen, that the new royal couple would have their hands full shortly following the change of throne.
It is currently unknown where Frederik traveled with the royal family. Traditionally, they relax in Verbier in winter. They own an elegant chalet in the Valais ski resort.
