R. Sikorski – about bombed cities and deported children: Poland is on your side in this fight

This is his first foreign visit as the Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The visit is a sign of the new Polish government’s pledge to support Ukraine after tensions rose under the previous government.

“It is completely unacceptable that one country attacks its neighbor, bombards cities, destroys entire regions, deports children (…) In this titanic struggle, Minister, Poland is on your side,” said R. Sikorski, after the negotiations were interrupted by air warning sirens.

Since February 2022, when Russia sent troops to Ukraine, Warsaw has become one of Kyiv’s staunchest allies. But relations between the two countries soured ahead of the October election, with Poland’s right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) party using war-weary rhetoric to win more votes.

But the new government led by former European Council President Donald Tusk has promised to increase support for Kyiv.

He promised to resolve the protest of Polish carriers at the Ukrainian border. Truck drivers have been blocking the border for more than a month, demanding that Ukrainian trucks be reinstated into the EU’s entry permit system.

R. Sikorski, who is expected to devote most of his visit to the blockade issue, reaffirmed Poland’s support for Ukraine.

“I think this is the last colonial war in Europe and it must end (…) this way: Russia should lose and Ukraine should win,” said the head of Polish diplomacy.

“And on this issue, regardless of who will be in power in Poland, as you can see, we are united,” he added.
