Rafa³ Gikiewicz returns to the top league after 10 years! Football

by Alexandra Hartman Editor-in-Chief

After the end of last season, FC Augsburg did not extend the expiring contract with Rafał Gikiewicz and following three years the goalkeeper had to look for a new employer. Not much time passed and his transfer was announced in a unique way by Turkish Ankaragucu.

And although he started the season in the starting lineup, following an injury he suffered in September, his place was taken by Turk Bahadir Gungordu. Since then, he has played only two matches, so he terminated his contract with the team at the beginning of February.

– The problem turned out to be the limit of foreigners, which led to unhealthy situations. We have three Turks in the first team, and one of them is a goalkeeper. He recently got injured during a match, but the third goalkeeper, Turek, was warming up. At that time, I was sitting under a blanket because I mightn’t enter the field without one more field change. And the paradox is the fact that I then get a bigger bonus as No. 2 in the hierarchy, and No. 3 who entered the pitch – he revealed in an interview with It’s in.

Rafał Gikiewicz returns to Poland. He is undergoing medical tests in Widzew Łódź

After parting with Ankaragucu, there was speculation that Gikiewicz might return to Poland, and the goalkeeper himself did not close himself off to this option. “Gazeta Krakowska” even reported on Sunday that Wisła Kraków is interested in him and is looking for a replacement for the injured Kamil Broda.

A few dozen minutes ago, it was unexpectedly reported that Gikiewicz was undergoing medical tests before joining Widzew Łódź. If nothing unexpected happens, he will return to Poland following more than 10 years, since he moved from Śląsk Wrocław to Eintracht Braunschweig in July 2014

Most likely, Gikiewicz will quickly join the starting lineup of the Łódź club, because only 20-year-old Jan Krzywański appeared on the pitch in recent matches. After the departure of Henrich Ravas, who last month moved to New England Revolution for over a million euros, the club’s authorities brought in Ivan Krajcirik, but so far he has not managed to make his debut in the new colors.

Widzew started the autumn round very poorly, although on Sunday it faced the table leader Jagiellonia Białystok (1:3). After 20 rounds, Daniel Myśliwiec’s players are in 14th place in the top league with 22 points, four points ahead of the relegation zone.
