In a rare medical case, a woman with a double uterus gave birth to healthy twin girls, following giving birth to them on two different days, the hospital treating her in the US state of Alabama announced on Friday.

In what doctors call “one pregnancy in a million” given the rare occurrence of similar cases, Kelsey Hatcher, 32 years old, gave birth to twins on two different days, following each of them grew in a separate womb, at the University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham, “As reported”The Guardian“.

The hospital announced that the woman, Kesley Hatcher, gave birth, following 20 hours of labor, to baby Roxy Laila on Tuesday and her second daughter, Rebel Laken, on Wednesday.

Hatcher said in the hospital’s press release: “Never in our wildest dreams might we have planned pregnancy and childbirth in this way… but most importantly, we brought our two girls healthy and safe into this world,” thanking the medical staff.

She continued: “They both had their own ‘home’, and now they also have a unique and special birth story as well.”

Hatcher was diagnosed with a double uterus when she was 17 years old.

The formation of a double uterus remains a rare condition that appears from birth in some women. It is estimated that only regarding 0.3 percent of women in the world suffer from this condition.

During a routine ultrasound examination last May, Hatcher, a mother of three children, learned that she was pregnant with twins, and that each fetus was growing in one of her uteruses.

As a result of this situation, Hatcher needed additional medical “monitoring and planning” throughout the weeks leading up to her pregnancy.

On Friday, following hours of labor, Hatcher gave birth to her daughter, Roxy Laila, naturally, as was the case for her three previous children, while Rebel Lakin was born via cesarean section the next day.
