A couple of white-tailed eagles have started to build a nest in the De Blankaart nature reserve in West Flanders, the environmental association Natuurpunt reported this Monday. It is therefore possible that these raptors will soon breed in Belgium, which would be a first in hundreds of years.
The two large sea eagles settled in the nature reserve near Diksmuide last spring. The two raptors were expected to leave following a few days but they began to build a nest in a willow tree, from which they chased a pair of buzzards. It remains to be seen whether the couple will give birth to little bearded eagles next spring. “This would then be a first for centuries in Belgium”, soulful Natuurpunt.
These white-tailed eagles probably come from neighboring Netherlands, where the species has been breeding since 2006. Thirty-six pairs have already been recorded there this year.
The nature protection organization calls on passers-by to disturb the duo of birds of prey, now named Betty and Paul, as little as possible.
The bald eagle is one of the largest European birds of prey, with a wingspan of up to two and a half meters. It feeds mainly on geese and coots, as well as occasionally muskrats or herons.
