Three women relaxing on inflatable tubes in sunny Montana had to be rushed to hospital following a “rare” otter attack on Wednesday left one of them with “more serious” injuries.
“Although otter attacks are rare, otters can protect themselves and their young, especially at close range. […] They can also protect food resources, especially when those resources are scarce,” the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks explained Thursday, according to CBS News.
On Wednesday, the three women were observing otters in the distance while floating in buoys on the Jefferson River in Montana when one approached, before attacking them.
The three women would have managed to flee and reach the shore, reported the American media. They all suffered injuries that required medical attention, and one of them had to be airlifted to hospital for “more severe” injuries, authorities reportedly said.
This is the second otter attack in less than a month, while one reportedly attacked the owner of a surfboard in California around mid-July.
The authorities had then warned the population to stay away from these mammals, with a jovial appearance, which can become aggressive, “bite, scratch and climb on the boards”, recalled CBS News.
These marine animals usually give birth during the month of April and can be seen with their young during the summer, according to the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks.
