Breaking News: Eckernförde’s New Bicycle Traffic Concept to Boost Cycling

Eckernförde, Germany – In a significant step towards sustainable transportation, the city of Eckernförde is set to strengthen its bicycle traffic infrastructure. The consensus among local politics and administration has led to the development of a comprehensive bicycle traffic concept, which will be put to a vote after the summer break.

Citizen Engagement and Information Event

Before the official vote, the city has invited citizens to an information event at the town hall on Thursday, June 26, at 6:30 p.m. This event aims to gather public input and address any concerns or suggestions from the community.

Short-Term and Long-Term Measures

The proposed concept includes both short-term measures, which require minimal intervention such as signage or markings, and long-term measures that necessitate structural changes. Olav Meiners from the municipal building authority emphasized the need for coordination with other authorities like the traffic department and the police.

Focus on Three Key Path Connections

The goal is to enhance cycling opportunities in Eckernförde, a city where traffic congestion is a pressing issue. Mayor Iris Ploog (SPD) highlighted the importance of creating better cycling options to encourage more people to use bicycles instead of cars, thereby reducing traffic and promoting a healthier lifestyle.

  • Extension of the bike path from the horse market to Noorstraße, continuing via the Green Way and B76 to Kakabellenweg and further to the Lorenz-von-Stein-Ring.
  • Creation of a new path via Bornbrook, Admiral-Scheer-Straße, and Sehestedter Straße.
  • Transformation of Saxtorfer Weg into a bicycle road with priority for cyclists, while motorists can use Riesebyer Straße for faster travel.

Relaxing Traffic on Mühlenberg

To alleviate traffic on Mühlenberg and Gaehtjestraße, the concept proposes reducing the speed limit to 20 km/h on Mühlenberg and banning overtaking of bicycles and motorcycles. However, this measure will require detailed planning and coordination with relevant authorities.

Reducing Through Traffic in the City Center

The city aims to minimize through traffic in the city center, particularly in Vogelsang, without compromising the fire brigade’s accessibility. One-way bike paths will be introduced on streets like Vogelsang, Reeperbahn, and Schleswiger Straße, with cyclists using a protective strip on the road.

Future Planning and Financial Considerations

Mayor Ploog noted that the concept outlines goals that will require detailed planning and financial means. Given the city’s tense budget situation, securing the necessary funds will be crucial for implementing these measures.

Public Presentation and Feedback

The design of the bicycle traffic concept will be presented to the public on June 26 at 6:30 p.m. in the town hall. Citizens are encouraged to ask questions and provide suggestions during this event.

Eckernförde’s new bicycle traffic concept is a significant step towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly future. By investing in cycling infrastructure, the city aims to reduce traffic congestion, promote healthier lifestyles, and create a more livable urban environment.
