Helmut Marko, Red Bull F1’s motorsport advisor, has questioned whether Netflix’s documentary series Drive to Survive is still needed. The immersive footage of F1 first appeared on streaming services in 2019 and continues to pave new ways for new audiences to enter the sport.

Records show that the Netflix show was a huge success, with fans flocking to the circuit for a glimpse of the new hero, breaking attendance records at venues around the world. But Drive to Survive wasn’t without controversy. Initially, Mercedes and Ferrari declined to participate, paving the way for Red Bull to take center stage in the paddock. Many drivers became disillusioned with this strategy of reconfiguring historical facts and real-life events to suit the story. Max Verstappen quit filming following appearing in the first season. In an interview with Motorsport-Magazin, Helmut Marko explained: “The number of viewers in Formula 1 has increased dramatically. We are talking regarding a 20% increase in viewership.” He questioned the show’s legitimacy and necessity, adding, “You may know the Netflix series, but this has nothing to do with reality.” “It created a breakthrough for F1 in America, but as far as the ratings and interest go, you can argue whether it makes sense or is necessary.”
