Relief for the Rhine Valley Railway: Bahn awards construction mandate for the Offenburg-Müllheim freight route

Breaking News: DB Awards Construction Contract for New Freight Line in Rhine Valley

In a significant development for the Rhine Valley Railway, the Deutsche Bahn (DB) has announced the awarding of the first construction contract for a new freight transport line between Offenburg and Müllheim. This initiative aims to bolster the quality and punctuality of passenger transport while providing a more reliable route for freight customers.

Immediate Impact and Future Benefits

The new line, expected to start construction in the first half of 2026, will cover an 11-kilometer stretch between Riegel and March, featuring 23 bridges that need expansion before the new rails can be laid. This ambitious project will not only overlay the A5 highway but also an existing railway line, ensuring a seamless integration of the new infrastructure.

Complex Engineering Challenges

The most complex part of the project involves constructing new bridges over the Feuerbach river near Nimburg. The current structure will be replaced with a larger frame, and a second bridge will be built to carry the new railway line over the river. The Feuerbach itself will be rerouted to accommodate the new freight line to the east of the highway. The construction period for these initial buildings is estimated to be about 1.5 years.

Bernd Dassler, technical project manager for the section Kenzingen – Müllheim, commented: “Some of the buildings we construct on the A5 will bring traffic restrictions with them. Therefore, we are not renewing these buildings simultaneously but focusing on the bridges over the Feuerbach near Nimburg and the Kreisstraße K5130 between Bottingen and Reute. We are pleased with the market interest in building this freight train route.”

Evergreen Context: The Rhine Valley Railway’s Historical Significance

The Rhine Valley Railway has been a critical transportation corridor for centuries, connecting major cities and facilitating both passenger and freight transport. This new development is part of a broader effort to modernize and enhance the efficiency of this historic route, ensuring it remains relevant in the 21st century.

Expert Insights and Future Implications

Transportation experts highlight that such infrastructure projects are essential for maintaining Europe’s competitive edge in global trade. By investing in modern, efficient railway systems, Germany aims to reduce congestion, lower carbon emissions, and improve overall logistics for businesses.
