Fossilized remains of three Ice Age mastodons have been found in the Andes mountains of Peru, raising the question of how these giant animals got here.
The discovery was made during excavations that began in 2019, when the remains were found in a valley near the town of Chambara. These mastodons are believed to be around 11,000 to 12,000 years old, and one of the remains is almost complete. .
Paleontologist Ivan Meza has said that if his skull is found, it could be the best-preserved mastodon in Peru.
Ivan Meza says the area is less than a hectare and three specimens have been found so far, and possibly more animal remains. Experts believe that these mastodons may have migrated from North America to South America when the climate changed.
