Remco Evenepoel’s Impressive Stage Victory and Romain Bardet’s Struggle for Resupply at the Vuelta: Fair Play in Professional Cycling

2023-09-09 17:33:00

After a sad day without Remco Evenepoel, the Belgian showed that he still had something under his belt. The Belgian went for a very good stage victory but that risks being insufficient for the red jersey.

During his dazzling attack, only one rider managed to stand up to Remco: Romain Bardet (Team DSM-Firmenich). The Frenchman knew that the Belgian was going to pull out all the stops following the disillusionment of the day before.

But for Romain Bardet, it was too difficult to follow the time trial world champion. One thing might perhaps have helped him more: resupply. While the Frenchman was following Remco closely, he twice asked the Jumbo-Visma refuelers for a container of water. The latter clearly denied the Frenchman’s request for help in the great heat of the Vuelta.

A gesture of little fair play, certainly, but not new. It is not uncommon to see team feeders refusing to help other riders. A regular practice even if we prefer to see images of solidarity more often during these beautiful races.
