New York: Famous translator Edith Marion Grossman (87) passed away. He died in New York while undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer. Known for translating Latin American and Spanish works into English, Grossman has translated works by Nobel laureates such as Gabriel García Márquez, Mario Vargas Llosa, Mayra Montero, Augusto Montereso, Jaime Mantic, and Julián Reyes.

In 2004, through their new translation of Don Quixote, Harold Bloom described Cervantes’ position above Shakespeare. Through the translation, Grossmann gave new life to the Spanish masterpiece published in 1615 with a modern translation.

Born in Philadelphia on March 22, 1936, Grossman earned a master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a PhD from New York University, and began her teaching career at New York University. Argentinian writer Macedonio Fernandez’s story collection is translated into translation.
