Remembering Johannes Honsell: The Legacy of a Giant in Children’s Filmmaking

The director had a huge cinema success with “Checker Tobi and the Journey to the Flying Rivers”. The 45-year-old, who comes from Salzburg, has now died unexpectedly.

Johannes Honsell died unexpectedly in Munich on December 27th, report “Standard” and “Spiegel”. He succumbed to cancer.

He was considered the most successful children’s filmmaker in German-speaking countries. He co-developed the “Checker” format Knowledge report series that has been popular for years.

His film “Living and Dying Check” with Tobias Krell as the main actor won several awards and was nominated for the Grimme Prize.

Honsell had German and Austrian citizenship. He grew up in Salzburg and studied history in Munich and attended the German Journalism School.

Honsell leaves behind his wife and their son.
