Rescue Operation: Firefighters and Sea Life Aquarium Team Up to Return Seal to the Sea in Bruges’ Ringvaart Canal

A seal was swimming in Bruges’ Ringvaart canal (a loop of canals bypassing the city) on Friday morning. Passers-by saw the animal. The firefighters and the healers of the seal rehabilitation center of the Sea Life aquarium in Blankenberge went to the scene to bring him back to the sea.

“Firefighters and city services were quickly informed and followed the situation closely. The navigation was also asked to adjust the speed and be on the lookout, ”explains the acting mayor Minou Esquenet (CD&V). “According to lock keepers, the animal has been swimming in the area for regarding two weeks already. The animal clearly had fun here.”

The City of Bruges finally contacted the seal rehabilitation center to find a solution. “To ensure the animal’s well-being as well as possible, Sea Life Blankenberge has decided to take the seal back to the sea this followingnoon, together with the fire brigade.”
