The alderman of Knokke-Heist Kris Demeyere (Gemeentebelangen, Communal Interests) has submitted his resignation, he said in an open letter on Thursday. The man was no longer active since he had sold his skills, including that of Town Planning, in December 2022, following suspicions of conflicts of interest concerning a real estate project. He is now leaving politics for good.
The West Flanders public prosecutor’s office, Bruges section, recently opened an investigation into his role in a real estate transaction. The resigning alderman continues to proclaim his innocence and indicates that he has also launched legal proceedings. “I will not let my name and my reputation drag in the mud. I have full confidence in the judicial authorities,” he said.
