Resignation of Polish Health Minister Adam Niedzielski: Violation of Medical Confidentiality and Controversial Reforms

2023-08-08 19:22:34

Polish Health Minister Adam Niedzielski has resigned following releasing medical data from a doctor who criticized one of his reforms.

“I have decided to accept the resignation of Health Minister Adam Niedzielski,” Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki of the right-wing ruling Law and Justice Party (PiS) told journalists today. His successor will be PiS MP Katarzyna Sojka.

Name published on Twitter

Niedzielski had been criticized by experts for a reform that restricted the ability to prescribe medicines online. On August 4, the minister then circulated the name of his critic on Twitter, adding that the doctor had prescribed psychotropic drugs and painkillers himself.

The Polish Medical Association criticized this as a violation of medical confidentiality and announced that it “sees no more opportunity to work with Minister Niedzielski”.
