Restoration of Former French Consulate in Rue des Consuls: A Historic Landmark Reborn in Rabat

We are finally set on the fate of the former French consulate located in the mythical Rue des Consuls in the medina of Rabat and built in the 18th century. After decades abandoned despite the fact that it is classified as national heritage, like the street that houses it, this huge building will be restored by Rabat Région Aménagement. This local development company (SDL) has just entrusted the rehabilitation work of this monument to the company Le Palais d’Aménagement for a tidy sum exceeding just 17 million dirhams.

A few years ago, this former French consulate belonging to Morocco since Independence, was emptied of people who squatted it and walled up waiting for better days. It is one of the first French chancelleries in Morocco and Africa. Between 1768 and 1782, this building served as the residence of Louis de Chénier, the father of the famous poet André Chénier.

The missions of this consulate were frozen in 1912 with the establishment of the Protectorate since all the prerogatives had been monopolized by the Resident General.

In Rabat, the Rue des Consuls, which housed the residences of several foreign ambassadors and consuls, is a must-see site for national and foreign tourists visiting the capital of the Kingdom.
