Rewe Invests €600 Million in State-of-the-Art Logistics Center

Rewe, the retail giant behind brands like Billa, Penny, and Bipa, is set to build a cutting-edge logistics center in Wiener Neudorf. This €600 million investment is the largest private project in Lower Austria’s history, signaling a significant boost for the region’s economy.

“We need more space and storage,” explains Rewe board member Marcel Haraszti. “The previous warehouse will be replaced after 30 years of operation.”

More Storage, More Technology

The new high-bay warehouse will offer space for 87,000 pallets, more than double the current capacity. Project manager Isabella Handler expects a notable increase in efficiency, with capacity gains in the lower double-digit percentage range. Automation will play a crucial role, with storage and sorting processes becoming almost fully automatic.

Job Stability Amid Automation

Despite the shift towards automation, Rewe assures that jobs will not be reduced. Currently, around 4,000 employees work in Wiener Neudorf, with an additional 200 new jobs expected to be created.

Sustainable Construction and Logistics

The new building will be constructed on already sealed soil, with 20% of the energy requirement covered by photovoltaic systems. More efficient logistics will reduce the need for truck trips, contributing to sustainability efforts. Construction is planned for 2026, with commissioning slated for 2030.

Governor’s Praise and Infrastructure Demands

Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner hailed the project as an “important economic engine” for the region. She called for the expansion of the A2 connection to avoid traffic bottlenecks, underscoring the need for improved infrastructure to support the growing industrial center.

Commitment to Branch Network Modernization

Rewe remains committed to its extensive branch network, supplying 2,500 branches in the eastern region. Despite high costs, the company emphasizes the importance of a close-knit network. Over the next three years, €850 million will be invested in renovating existing markets.

This investment underscores Rewe’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, positioning the company as a leader in the retail sector. As the logistics center takes shape, it promises to bring significant economic benefits and job opportunities to Lower Austria.
