As car theft is on the rise in Canada, it has been revealed that the Minister of Justice’s official car has been stolen three times in the past three years.

Canada’s CBC reported on the 8th (local time) that Justice Minister Arif Birani’s official car was recovered following it was stolen in November of last year.

The car model is Toyota’s sports utility vehicle (SUV) Highlander, and this car was previously stolen and recovered in February last year while being used as an official car by former Justice Minister David Lametti.

In February 2021, former Minister Lametti’s other official car of the same type was stolen, officials said.

Not only the Minister of Justice. A Toyota Highlander official car was stolen in February last year while Emergency Planning Minister Harjit Sajjan was serving as International Development Minister and was later recovered.

Additionally, IRS Commissioner Bob Hamilton’s Toyota official car was also stolen in 2022. This vehicle has not been found.

This fact was revealed at the ‘Car Theft Joint Summit’ held in Ottawa to jointly address public-private responses to car theft.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said at the meeting that the car theft situation, which has worsened over the past few years, is “shocking” and pointed out that “organized crime is becoming more and more blatant, and the market for stolen vehicles traded overseas continues to expand.”

The Canadian government plans to take active action by investing 28 million Canadian dollars (regarding 27.6 billion won) to prevent car theft and smuggling abroad.

It is known that in Canada, 900,000 cars are stolen each year and most of them are smuggled to overseas second-hand markets, and criminal organizations are mainly involved.
