Robert Nkemdiche Arrested: Former NFL Player in Georgia

by Luis Mendoza - Sport Editor

A quiet patrol outside a Georgia grocery store took an unexpected turn last week, resulting in the arrest of former NFL defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche. The incident, initially involving a report of concealed groceries, quickly escalated as authorities discovered multiple outstanding warrants in several states, according to reports from TMZ Sports and USA Today.

Nkemdiche, 31, was a highly touted prospect coming out of Ole Miss, selected 29th overall by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2016 NFL Draft. While his NFL career never fully materialized, the arrest marks the latest chapter in a series of legal troubles for the former first-round pick. The incident highlights the challenges faced by athletes even after leaving the professional sports arena.

Incident at Kroger Grocery Store

The initial report stemmed from a police officer observing Nkemdiche leaving a Kroger grocery store with what appeared to be “many large objects, square and rectangular shapes, consistent with concealed grocery items, inside his sweatpants,” as detailed in the police report obtained by USA Today. While the alleged grocery theft wasn’t the primary cause of the arrest, it drew the attention of law enforcement. Officers called for backup as Nkemdiche walked toward a nearby gas station.

Upon making contact, police placed Nkemdiche in handcuffs. Although the concealed items were no longer in his possession, a subsequent search of the Kroger and gas station parking lots revealed “frozen grocery items, candy bars and almond milk,” according to Sporting News. The Kroger store representative reportedly did not wish to press charges for the stolen items but requested Nkemdiche be banned from the establishment.

Outstanding Warrants Lead to Arrest

The situation escalated when officers discovered multiple outstanding warrants in several states during a routine check. Three warrants were active in Georgia alone, prompting county officials to request a hold on Nkemdiche, as reported by USA Today. Nkemdiche was subsequently booked into jail.

This arrest marks at least the third time Nkemdiche has been arrested in the past year, according to Heavy.com. His previous legal issues include incidents dating back to his time at Ole Miss, where he was suspended for the Sugar Bowl.

Nkemdiche’s NFL Career

Nkemdiche played for the Arizona Cardinals from 2016 through 2018. He showed flashes of potential when healthy, recording 4.5 sacks and 10 tackles for loss during his time with the team, but injuries hampered his ability to consistently contribute. He later played for the CFL’s Edmonton Elks, as noted by 3DownNation.

The details surrounding the outstanding warrants have not been fully disclosed at this time. Authorities have not released information regarding the nature of the warrants or potential charges beyond the initial incident at the grocery store.

As of March 6, 2026, Nkemdiche remains in custody. The next step will likely involve court appearances to address the outstanding warrants and any potential charges stemming from the incident at the Kroger store. The situation raises questions about the support systems available to former athletes navigating life after professional sports and the challenges they face in transitioning to novel phases of their lives.
