Rory McIlroy Withdraws from Arnold Palmer Invitational with Back Injury

by Luis Mendoza - Sport Editor

ORLANDO, Fla. – Rory McIlroy’s bid for a strong showing at the Arnold Palmer Invitational came to an abrupt end Saturday as he withdrew before his third-round tee time due to a back injury. The withdrawal marks just the second time in his professional career that McIlroy has pulled out of a tournament mid-event, a concerning development as he prepares for the upcoming major season.

The World No. 2, who fired a 4-under 68 on Friday to climb into contention, was nine strokes behind co-leader Daniel Berger when he began experiencing discomfort. According to Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis, the issue originated with a tweaked muscle during his pre-round warmup in the gym. McIlroy attempted to work through the pain on the practice range, but ultimately decided to withdraw.

“Even as warming up in the gym this morning, I felt a small twinge in my back,” McIlroy said in a statement released shortly after his withdrawal. “As I started hitting balls on the range before the round, it worsened and developed into muscle spasms in my lower back. Unfortunately, I’m not able to continue and have to withdraw. I was excited to compete this weekend. I wish the Arnold Palmer Invitational a great finish and look forward to being back next year.”

McIlroy, a career Grand Slam winner, had expressed confidence in his game leading up to the tournament, coming off a tied-for-second finish at The Genesis Invitational. He is the defending champion at both next week’s Players Championship and the Masters Tournament, which is scheduled to begin April 12th, 33 days from today.

A Familiar Discomfort for McIlroy

This isn’t the first time McIlroy has been sidelined by a health issue during a tournament. His previous withdrawal came at the 2013 Honda Classic, where he cited a toothache while sitting at 7-over par. This latest setback, although, raises concerns about his physical condition with two significant events looming on the horizon.

Despite the discomfort, McIlroy appeared to be in good spirits as he left Bay Hill Club and Lodge, telling Golfweek’s Adam Schupak he was “all good.” However, the decision to withdraw underscores the importance he places on being fully fit for the Players Championship and the Masters.

Looking Ahead to a Crucial Stretch

McIlroy’s typical warmup routine involves putting first, but he deviated from that on Saturday, heading straight to the range to assess the severity of the pain. He acknowledged to Lewis that he might have been able to play through the discomfort, but ultimately prioritized rest and treatment to ensure he’s in optimal condition for the challenges ahead.

The 36-year-old McIlroy won the Arnold Palmer Invitational in 2018 and will be looking to defend his title at the Players Championship next week. He defeated J.J. Spaun in a three-hole playoff at last year’s Players, and is scheduled to hold a pre-tournament press conference on Wednesday at 7:45 a.m. ET.

Austin Smotherman also withdrew from the third round on Saturday, citing a back injury, adding to the challenges presented by the Bay Hill course. Smotherman held the 54-hole lead at the Cognizant Classic last week before finishing in a tie for second.

The focus now shifts to McIlroy’s recovery and preparation for the Players Championship. His ability to manage this back issue will be critical as he aims to continue his impressive form and contend for another major championship.
