Rumors of a Verlander Trade: Dodgers’ Pursuit and MLB Trade Deadline Updates

2023-07-29 16:40:47

It’s looking increasingly likely that the Mets will trade veteran Justin Verlander before the Aug. 1 trade deadline, and the Dodgers are one of the teams interested in the right-hander, according to a Los Angeles Times report.

The Dodgers reportedly tried to sign Verlander last winter before he ended up joining the Mets on a two-year, $86.6 million contract with the Mets that includes an option for 2025.

Despite injuries to the rotation, the Dodgers have not only stayed afloat, but have regained and maintained control of the top spot in the NL West. But if they’re going to go far in October, they’ll have to add arms to a group that currently includes two rookies along with Clayton Kershaw, Julio Cesar Urías and Tony Gonsolin. Ace Walker Buehler has hopes of returning in September, but that remains to be seen, and Dustin May is out for the rest of the season.

With his pedigree and another solid season so far in 2023, Verlander might be the best traded pitcher before this year’s deadline, and the Dodgers definitely need a proven postseason starter.
