“These practical maneuvers will take place in the waters of the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea,” the Russian authorities noted, before adding that “the main objective of the maneuvers is to check the safety of economic activities at sea.”

The Russian-Chinese-Iranian naval exercises that begin on Tuesday are the fifth to be held in that format in the Gulf of Oman.

The arrival of the Russian ships to the Iranian port coincided with reports in the Russian press regarding the dismissal of the commander-in-chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov, following the sinking of several Russian ships by Ukrainian nautical drones.

The Izvestia newspaper and the Fontanka digital portal reported that Yevmenov was replaced by the commander-in-chief of the Northern Fleet, Alexandr Moiseyev.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov declined to comment on these publications on Monday. “There are decrees with the seal of secrecy and I cannot comment on them,” he said in his daily telephone press conference.

The military activities, which will end on Friday, seek to “jointly maintain regional maritime security,” said a statement from the Chinese Ministry of Defense published on the WeChat social network.

“China will send… a guided missile destroyer Urumqi, the guided missile frigate Linyi and the integrated logistics ship Dongpinghu to participate in the exercise,” the statement added, without offering further details.

This year’s exercises coincide with increased tensions in the region as a result of the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

The conflict, which began on October 7, has triggered a series of attacks by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels once morest ships in the Red Sea.

For his part, the Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs, Israel Katz, asked this Monday the United Nations Security Council, of which Russia and China are part, to “exercise all possible pressure” on Hamas to release the people which he kidnapped during the October 7 terrorist attack once morest Israel.

Katz addressed the 15-member Council, which met to debate a U.N. report that said there are “reasonable grounds to believe” that acts of sexual violence, including rape and gang rape, occurred in several locations during the attack.

“We ask you to condemn the crimes of sexual violence that these barbarians committed in the name of the Muslim religion,” Katz told the Security Council, also urging the body to “exert all possible pressure on the Hamas organization to immediately and unconditionally release to all the kidnapped hostages.”

He called for sanctions to be imposed on Hamas, accusing the group of crimes “worse than the terrorist actions carried out by Al Qaeda, ISIS and other terrorist organizations” that had been targeted by the Security Council.
