Russia was on the agenda when the foreign ministers from Ukraine and Hungary met

Hungary has upset its NATO and EU allies by maintaining close economic ties with Russia despite the country’s invasion of Ukraine.

Hungary has also refused to send arms support to its war-torn neighbor.

Ukraine, for its part, has stopped the flow of oil from Russian Lukoil to refineries in Hungary and Slovakia, which has forced Hungarian MOL to renegotiate supply agreements with Belarus and Ukraine.

However, at a joint press conference on Monday afternoon, Sybiha thanked Hungary for supporting EU sanctions against Russia and said Ukraine was committed to developing “pragmatic and predictable neighborly relations”.

But after Szijjarto said Hungary would support any initiative that would achieve peace in Ukraine, Sybiha clarified that he hoped Hungary would also continue to support “Ukrainian initiatives,” referring to peace plans put forward by Ukrainian authorities that reject Russia’s territorial gains.

For his part, Szijjarto emphasized that he hoped Ukraine would refrain from measures affecting Hungary’s energy supply, but promised that the country would help rebuild Ukraine after the war.
