Russian Ambassador: Romania Can’t Afford Moldova Union, Accuses West & NATO

Bucharest – Russia’s ambassador to Romania, Vladimir Lipaev, has publicly questioned Romania’s financial capacity to absorb Moldova in a potential unification, citing economic concerns and historical tensions. In a wide-ranging interview with Russian state news agency TASS, Lipaev likewise leveled accusations against the Moldovan government of prioritizing Romanian interests and suppressing Moldovan identity. The statements, reported by logos-pres.md, represent a sharp critique of Bucharest’s regional policies and its relationship with Chișinău.

Lipaev suggested that while the idea of unification has been floated by Moldovan authorities, it lacks broad public support within Moldova itself. He attributed this to lingering historical grievances, claiming that Moldova experienced “two Romanian occupations” in the 20th century marked by abuses. “The memory of the events of those years remains vivid among the Moldovan people and, for now, serves as an antidote to the idea of unification. The majority of the population, as is known, does not support it,” Lipaev stated, according to the TASS report.

The ambassador further accused the political elite in Chișinău of actively pursuing a “Romanization” of Moldovan society, alleging a systematic effort to diminish Moldovan language and culture. He claimed that Moldovan is not taught in schools, replaced by Romanian, and that history is presented from a Romanian perspective. Lipaev also asserted that many leading Moldovan politicians, including President Maia Sandu, hold Romanian passports and that key government positions are filled by Romanian nationals. He went on to allege that Moldova’s security, energy, and banking systems are under direct Romanian control.

Historical Tensions and Public Opinion

Addressing Romanian public opinion regarding unification, Lipaev acknowledged that the concept of a shared Romanian-Moldovan identity has gained traction, fueled by what he described as “aggressive propaganda” exploited by nationalist parties for electoral gain. However, he maintained that Bucharest is aware of the practical challenges involved. According to Lipaev, the official stance is that Moldovan citizens must first express their support for unification before any action is considered. He also raised concerns about Moldova’s economic situation, stating that it is one of the poorest countries in Europe, largely due to the policies of President Sandu’s administration, and that Romania may be unable to bear the financial burden of unification.

Instead, Lipaev suggested that the focus is shifting towards Moldova’s integration into the European Union, which would allow Romania to transfer some of the associated costs to other partners.

Accusations Against the Romanian Orthodox Church

The Russian ambassador also weighed in on the ongoing church schism in Moldova, accusing the Romanian Orthodox Church of actively working to undermine the Russian Orthodox Church and subordinate the Orthodox Church of Moldova to the Romanian Patriarchate. He characterized this as an “aggressive expansion” into foreign canonical territory, exacerbating the schism and threatening the unity of the global Orthodox community.

NATO and Regional Security Concerns

Lipaev characterized Romania’s role within NATO as a potential threat, despite the alliance’s stated defensive purpose. He minimized Romania’s significance within NATO, arguing that the real danger lies in its membership, which he believes could make it a launchpad for a conflict with Russia. “Today, the Romanian authorities willingly host NATO military facilities on their territory and insistently advocate for increasing the presence of foreign military contingents in the country,” Lipaev stated. “They justify this by the mythical ‘Russian threat.’ They prefer not to notice, or perhaps do not sincerely understand, that the main threat to the country’s security does not come from Russia, but from membership in the aggressive NATO bloc.” He warned that Romania risks repeating past mistakes by failing to learn from history.

Aid to Ukraine and Economic Strain

Regarding Romania’s military aid to Ukraine, Lipaev claimed it is conducted in secrecy but acknowledged growing public fatigue with the financial burden. He cited polls suggesting that over 40% of the Romanian population believes the aid is unwarranted, with a growing expectation that Russia will ultimately prevail in the conflict. He also alleged that Russian citizens in Romania face discrimination, though he conceded What we have is primarily limited to everyday services and business dealings.

Finally, Lipaev attributed Romania’s economic struggles to the EU’s sanctions policy against Russia, citing increased energy costs and disruptions to supply chains. He also criticized the relationship between Bucharest and the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, blaming the EU and its foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, for hindering professional dialogue.

The ambassador’s statements reflect a consistent narrative from Moscow regarding its neighbors and the geopolitical landscape in Eastern Europe. As Moldova continues to navigate its path towards European integration, and as Romania remains a key NATO ally, these accusations are likely to continue shaping the discourse surrounding regional security and cooperation.

The future of relations between Romania and Moldova, and their respective ties with Russia and the EU, will depend on a complex interplay of political, economic, and historical factors. Continued monitoring of these developments will be crucial for understanding the evolving dynamics of the region.
