Barely a week ago, Ukraine’s largest mobile operator fell victim to the largest cyberattack since Russia’s invasion began in 2022. Its services, on which more than half the population depends, in particular to receive alerts warning of air attacks, were put out of use for more than two days.

This news alone demonstrates why the National Information Systems Security Agency (Anssi) describes the telecommunications sector as “super-critical”, in a memo published this Monday morning. Less publicized than cyberattacks targeting the computer networks of communities or large companies, those targeting telephone or internet access providers, as well as cable or infrastructure providers, are nevertheless frequent.
